What is RYA Discover Sailing at Llandegfedd?

RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Discover Sailing at Llandegfedd Lake is jointly organised by Llandegfedd Sailing Club and Llandegfedd Activity Centre with assistance from Torfaen Sea Cadets. It will provide the opportunity for members of the public to sample sailing at the lake in a variety of boats accompanied by a qualified volunteer from the sailing club or an instructor from the Llandegfedd Activity Centre.

If you don’t feel ready to sail there will be the opportunity to chat with members of the sailing club and staff from the Activity Centre about how to get involved, learn to sail or develop your sailing skills.

Join us for a fun packed day in a beautiful location. Coffee will be provided but why not bring a picnic and enjoy the location?

Who can join in?

The event is suitable for families, although children have to be more than 5 years old and if less than 14 years they will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.  No previous skill or experience is required and you will be accompanied by an experienced instructor. Llandegfedd Activity Centre also offers facilities which allow disabled people to try sailing.

When and where does it take place?

At Llandegfedd Lake, Coed-y-paen, near Pontypool, NP4 0SY on Monday 8th May between 0930 and 1700. Park and look for the RYA Discover Sailing signs.

How do I register? What does it cost?

You don’t need to register to come and chat. There is a limited amount of sailing space available so you are advised to book early. Sailing is free but there is a £5 booking fee to secure a 30 minute session.

Please click the link below to register. This will take you directly to the Llandegfedd Adventures booking page.

What clothing or safety equipment do I require?

Everybody has to wear a buoyancy aid when on the water and children under 5 must wear a lifejacket. A wetsuit is a good idea but not essential.  If you do not have suitable equipment Llandegfedd Watersports are able to provide wetsuits, buoyancy aids and helmets as appropriate. If you need to borrow a wetsuit remember to bring a swimsuit.

Footwear must be worn when entering or exiting the water.  It is a good idea to bring old trainers or water shoes and spare set of warm dry clothing. Don’t forget a warm hat, suncream and a bottle of water.

Changing rooms, lockers and showers are available.

What happens if the weather is not good?

Llandegfedd Adventures will decide whether it is safe to sail, depending on conditions, age and experience. Should sailing not be possible you will be able to find out all about sailing and sail training opportunities by talking with instructors and club members in the clubhouse.
