Notice of Race for Top Gun Sprint Races

Introduction

Llandegfedd Sailing Club has been holding one day special events for a number of years about every two months. We have decided to have a different race format of “sprints”.  Here, many short races are held, with the results aggregated.  We will have one fleet and start to ensure fair racing in the same or similar wind. 

1 RULES

1.1 Club racing will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.
1.2 Racing rule(s) 26, 32, 33, 35, 60.1, will be changed as follows:
       26 – Starting (to allow for lights)
       32 – Shortened Courses
       33 – Change of Course
       35 – Time Limits
       60.1 – Protest

The changes will appear in full in the Sailing Instructions. The Sailing Instructions may also change other racing rules.

2. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

2.1 The current LLSC Sailing Instructions will apply, available on the club website at http://www.llandegfedd.org.uk  as amended by 11. and 12. below 

3. ELIGIBILITY 

3.1 Club Racing is open to all classes of mono-hull boats up to 20 feet in length. Where boats do not have a RYA recognised Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) number the Racing Committee will decide on a suitable handicap.

4. REGISTRATION

4.1 Registration to be made on the day of racing at the Watersports Centre, Llandegfedd Reservoir

5. FEES

5.1 No fee is charged to Llandegfedd Sailing Club members
5.2 Visitors fee will be £5 (towards DCWW charge)

6. BRIEFING

6.1 At 11:15am on the day of racing:

7. WARNING SIGNALS

7.1  11:58 on day of event; the subsequent races will be held back-to-back
7.2 Break at about 13:00
7.3 Starting at 14:00, further races will be held back-to-back. The last race will be started no later than 15:30

The race officer reserves the right to change the schedule of races due to prevailing or forecast weather conditions or other reasons.

8. THE COURSES

8.1 Courses will be finalised on the day of racing. 

  1. The anticipated course is based on an upwind start from the Committee boat, round a windward mark 1, and then a reach to another offset windward mark 2. A downwind leg to a leeward mark 3, followed by a reach to a further leeward mark 4 and back to finish at the committee boat. (1, 2, 3, 4, finish).

9. NO SAILING AREAS

9.1 See map of the lake in the Sailing Instructions.

10. RACE LENGTHS

10.1 Typically 10 – 15 minutes depending on conditions.

11. START SEQUENCE

11.1 Non-Standard 2-1-GO sequence. This changes S.I. number 11. There will be one start for all boats. 

12 SCORING

12.1 The low points system will apply as RRS Appendix A.
12.2 Three races are sufficient to constitute a series.  If four or more races are held a sailor’s highest score will be discarded (one discard) if seven or more races there will be two discards.  ALL boats will race against each other.
12.3 RRS A5.3 will apply.

13 RISK STATEMENT

13.1 RRS 3 states: ‘The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue to race is hers alone.’  By participating in this event each competitor agrees and acknowledges that sailing is a potentially dangerous activity with inherent risks. These risks include strong winds and rough water, sudden changes in weather, failure of equipment, boat handling errors, poor seamanship by other boats, loss of balance on an unstable platform and fatigue resulting in increased risk of injury.  Inherent in the sport of sailing is the risk of permanent, catastrophic injury or death by drowning, trauma, hypothermia or other causes.
13.2 The provision of patrol boat cover is limited to such assistance, particularly in extreme weather conditions, as can be practically provided in the circumstances;

14. SAFETY

14.1 All sailors must fully comply with the safety rules of the water laid down by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water

15. INSURANCE

15.1 Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a minimum cover of £3,000,000 per event or the equivalent.

16. PRIZES

16.1 Prizes may be awarded on the day.

17 RIGGING AND LAUNCHING

17.1 Once you have dropped off your boat, please do not leave cars or road bases in foreshore rigging area.
