Llandegfedd Lake Sailing Club Dragon Race, 13 May 2023

Llandegfedd Sailing Club were proud to host the RYA Cymru Dragon Race on 13th May. It was a day of two halfs for the weather, with spectators dressed in their shorts, huddling behind the OD hut to try to get out of the wind and stay warm during the morning, followed by sunning themselves in the weather they were dressed for in the afternoon!

The 37 sailors who took part (34 boats including 3 double handers) took advantage of the stronger wind during the morning with the General Handicap, Topper and Oppie fleets seeing some very competitive racing. Protests were raised and dropped, positions were gained and lost and a lot of fun was had.

We also welcomed 8 boats ( a mix of Oppies and Toppers) to our Onboard fleet. These are new sailors who have very little experience of racing - for some it was their first ever race. They were coached around the courses to ensure they knew where they needed to be and what they should be doing. There was lots of chatting and laughing amongst this group of our areas youngest sailors. Well done all, we hope to see you at many more races in the future.

The prize giving saw the new RYA wooden medals awarded to the winners along with extra prizes of sailing gloves, water bottles and the all important duct tape! Spot prizes were also given to sailors who went above and beyond to help others on the day and also to a very brave sailor for overcoming her fears.

Thank you to everyone who helped with organising, running and supporting the event. We look forward to seeing you all at the rest of the Dragons races throughout the year.
